Polk County School Board members Tuesday approved the proposed property tax rate and tentative budget for 2016-17 fiscal year with the unassigned fund balance at the level they want, but the upcoming year will still be financially difficult.
With 6-0 votes, the board approved a property tax rate of $6.797 per $1,000 of taxable property value and the $1.2 billion budget. They also scheduled a second public hearing and vote for Sept. 9. Board member Lori Cunningham was absent.
The proposed tax rate is 35.2 cents less than this year’s $7.149. If the board approves the $6.797 rate, that means the owner of a home with a taxable value of $150,000 and $25,000 in homestead exemptions would pay $850 in property taxes to the School District.
