Don’t divert state money to private schools

Florida lawmakers have failed to adequately fund public education and would only make matters worse with a proposal to funnel more taxpayer money into private schools.

The Legislature is considering spending more than $110 million in the next fiscal year on vouchers for 15,000 students to attend private and religious schools. The numbers would rise in subsequent years based on increases in the student population.

The plan would divert money from public education in a state that already ranks a disgraceful 41st in the country in per-pupil public school funding and 46th in teacher salaries.
